Cochrane Collaboration and Systematic Review Workshop, 20-21 February 2007, Dubai Women's Association.

(5.5 credit points in the category 1 of the MOH CME)

Workshop objectives:

- Participants be acquainted with the Cochrane Collaboration and its activities

- Participants should understand the differences between a systematic review & a traditional narrative review.

- Participants should understand the rationale for systematic reviews

- Participants understand the significance of levels of evidence represented as the ‘hierarchy of evidence’

- Participants should have obtained a foundation knowledge of the steps required to conduct a systematic review in the field of health care

The Cochrane Collaboration is an international organization that aims to help people make well-informed decisions about healthcare by preparing, maintaining and promoting the accessibility of systematic reviews of the effects of healthcare interventions.

This intensive two-day systematic review training workshop will allow the participants to get acquainted with the Cochrane Collaboration and its activities as well as provide the necessary skills to contribute to this type of research.

 

Who should attend?

Every one involved with health care as provider, recipient or researcher. This will include consumers who are patients or people interested in a particular field of medicine, nurses, doctors and healthcare personnel.

Day One:

Background to Systematic Reviews and the Cochrane Collaboration

- Why review systematically?

09:45–10:30 Group Discussion: Critical Appraisal of a systematic review

 

Designing a Systematic Review

10:30 10:45 Identifying a relevant research question

- Why set a focused question?

- Components of a focused question?

10:45-11:30 Group Discussion–Designing question for review

11:30–12: 00 Which studies should we include?

- Which outcome interests us and the users of the reviews?

- Inclusion and exclusion criteria

12:00-12-30 Group discussion- Design inclusion and exclusion criteria for your question

13:15–13:30 Format of a systematic review

13:30–13:45 Cochrane Library

13:45–14:15 Computer session on the Cochrane library

Finding the evidence

- Developing a search strategy

- Searching for relevant trials for systematic reviews: where, how and why?

13:30–14:00 Registering a title

14:00–14:30 Methodological Quality of the studies

14:30-15:30 Group task – Appraise a randomized controlled trial

15:15– 5:45 Practical exercise – Registering a title at a CRG online

15:45–16:00 Wrap up and Feedback.


 

 

Attendees prerequisite:

Basic skills in using the computer or internet, (Help will be provided whenever necessary) and English language knowledge.
